It’s Time to Be Unapologetically You

I eat fake cheese. You know, the kind that’s on nachos at sporting events. I eat that stuff – that weird, unnatural cheese product. I call it “Melty Cheese” and consume unbelievable amounts of it at every opportunity. Once, on a date, a guy took in the stack of plates I’d cleared that were previously holding Melty-Cheese-covered foods. He thought for a moment and finally said, “You’re going to be sorry to ate all of that.”

Sorry? I’m going to be sorry? No, I will not be sorry. Sure, that stuff may be the unhealthiest thing in a 20-mile radius, and I may gain a pound or two each time I devour that amount of it in one sitting, but I will not be sorry. I am me, and I like Melty Cheese, and that’s okay. I also hate exercise, creep on my ex on Instagram, drink more vodka than I should to deal with emotional turmoil, and wear clothes that have been out of style since before I was born.

What does this have to do with anyone else? Nothing. No one else will have to gain weight or vomit or cry or get mocked for the things I do. So, why, exactly will I be sorry for eating Melty Cheese, Cole? I will not apologize for my love of unnatural or unhealthy things, just as I will not apologize for any other decisions I make.  I am unapologetically me, and you should be unapologetically you.

Who is forced to wake up in your skin each day? Is it that girl tweeting that your sweater is ugly? Disregarding any Freaky Friday catastrophes, the only person that must live inside of your skin each day is you. Do you realize that gives us ultimate freedom? You have the freedom to be anyone, and you don’t have to answer to anyone else for it. You like to eat an entire tube of cookie dough in one sitting? Enjoy. You like to wear your hair in a messy bun every day? Woohoo! You ramble when you are nervous? Don’t you dare say “sorry” at the end of the rambling. You like to make horrible life decisions every once in a while?

GOOD. Do not apologize for being messy, tired, confused, unsure, whiney, hungry, clumsy, hyper, honest, emotional, sad, happy, disorganized, outgoing, shy, or any other attribute that makes you YOU. We have the freedom to do what we want and be who we want. So why on earth should we apologize for it? Be you and never apologize for it. Be unapologetically you.
